“An anime about terrorism?” Sounds thrilling alright, but sadly it turned out to be quite a train wreck with lose plot and lackluster characters in the long run. The plot, or rather the premise, was what caught my attention and interest at first. Just make sure that I will NOT be able to hideĪll possible spoilers, so just read this review if you have already finished the show or dropped it and don’t consider picking it up again! Or if you just don’t care about spoilers. The show also gained a bit of a hype because of the famous Shinichiro Watanabe (Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop), who I am in all honesty no big fan of, but okay, let's get this review started. Zankyou no Terror (Terror in Resonance or Terror in Tokyo in English) was one of my most anticipated titles of the season and I am sure I was not alone. How much did I praise you during the early few episodes, but how could I know that you will turn out how you did. They should not exist, yet they stand strong in a world of deception and secrets while they make the city fall around them, all in the hopes of burying their own tragic truth. Zankyou no Terror tells the story of Nine and Twelve, the two boys behind the masked figures of Sphinx. Unable to stop the mass panic quickly spreading through the city and desperate for any leads in their investigation, the police struggle to act effectively against these terrorists, with Detective Kenjirou Shibazaki caught in the middle of it all.

In it, two teenage boys who identify themselves only as "Sphinx" directly challenge the police, threatening to cause destruction and mayhem across Tokyo. The public are clueless-until, six months later, a strange video makes its way onto the internet.

The government is shattered by their inability to act, and the police are left frantically searching for ways to crack down the perpetrators. Listen to Sphinx’s unequivocal feat in its deadly race to sharing a poetic message covered in a hopeful, yet haunting word: “Von”, or peace.Painted in red, the word "VON" is all that is left behind after a terrorist attack on a nuclear facility in Japan. The New York-based POP ETC and Ryo Nagano, a guitarist based in Tokyo, also feature prominently in the soundtrack. Kanno stayed at Sigur Rós’s studio for a music session with Agent Fresco’s Arnór Dan, whose ethereal vocals ring throughout the soundtrack. That foreign sound came with Kanno’s travel to Iceland, the homeland to Sigur Rós, a post-rock band which Watanabe thought whose music fit the OVA’s aery mood. The OVA was, in a sense, “foreign,” Watanabe added. It has a “widening perspective that includes the world around the characters,” he said. The legendary hitmaker Yoko Kanno and director Shinichiro Watanabe has returned together, after Kids on the Slope (2012), to allay the universal message of peace amidst the chaos the nation has faced recently.įollowing the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, Watanabe said in an interview with Fuji Creative, that interacting with his neighbors shed light to an idea he first had in 2007.
